Functional Skills GCSE Mathematics

At Achieve Group based in Bury, we offer the Functional Skills Mathematics GCSE qualification training course to students across the North West.

GCSE Mathematics equips students with essential skills in problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking. It focuses on mathematical methods and their practical applications, helping learners build a solid foundation for life, work, and further education.

Achieving a grade 4 or above is crucial for progressing to advanced (Level 3) maths qualifications, such as Core Maths or A Level Mathematics. In most cases, a minimum of grade 6 is required for entry onto an A Level Maths course at schools and colleges.

GCSE Mathematics Exam Structure

Most students in the UK take GCSE Maths with one of the following exam boards:

  • AQA

  • Edexcel (Pearson)

  • OCR

Tiers of Entry

Students are entered for one of two tiers:

Foundation Tier (Grades 1–5)

  • Focuses on core mathematical skills

  • Suitable for students targeting a secure pass

Higher Tier (Grades 3–9)

  • Covers all Foundation content plus more advanced topics

  • Suitable for students aiming for grades 6 to 9

Assessment Format

  • Three written exam papers:

    • Paper 1: Non-calculator

    • Paper 2: Calculator

    • Paper 3: Calculator

  • Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long

  • Equal weighting (33.3% per paper)
