Functional Skills GCSE Science

At Achieve Group based in Bury, we offer the Functional Skills Science GCSE qualification training course to students across the North West.

Achieve Training

Our GCSE Science course is designed to inspire curiosity and develop a strong foundation in the core sciences — Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Whether you’re aiming for further study, a career in science, or simply want to gain a key qualification for life and work, this course provides the knowledge and practical skills you need to succeed.

Science Topics Covered

GCSE Science may be studied as either Combined Science (worth two GCSEs) or as Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as individual GCSEs). The topics below apply to both routes, with greater depth in Separate Sciences.

Biology

  • Cell biology

  • Organisation (e.g., tissues, organs, and systems)

  • Infection and response

  • Bioenergetics (photosynthesis and respiration)

  • Homeostasis and response

  • Inheritance, variation, and evolution

  • Ecology and ecosystems

Chemistry

  • Atomic structure and the periodic table

  • Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter

  • Quantitative chemistry

  • Chemical changes

  • Energy changes

  • The rate and extent of chemical reactions

  • Organic chemistry

  • Chemical analysis

  • The atmosphere and environmental chemistry

Physics

  • Forces and motion

  • Energy

  • Waves (including light and sound)

  • Electricity and circuits

  • Magnetism and electromagnetism

  • Particle model of matter

  • Atomic structure and radioactivity

  • Space physics (Separate Science only)

GCSE Science Exam Structure

Combined Science (Double Award)

  • Six exams in total (two each for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)

  • Each paper: 1 hour 15 minutes

  • Total of two GCSE grades awarded

Separate Sciences (Triple Award)

  • Six exams in total (two each for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)

  • Each paper: 1 hour 45 minutes

  • Three separate GCSE grades awarded (one for each subject)

Assessment Details

  • Mixture of multiple-choice, short-answer, and longer structured questions

  • Questions test knowledge, understanding, application, and practical skills

  • Practical work is embedded throughout, with required practicals forming part of the exam content
