Course Content
The student will
- Know how to prepare for installing basic plumbing.
- Describe the different information sources used when installing basic plumbing.
– Such as:
– manufacturers’ information and installation instructions, specification, drawings, British standard Building regulations, Gas regulations. - Describe the purpose of the information sources
- Describe different types of plumbing systems.
Including:
– gravity fed system, circulating pump, combi system unvented,sealed. - State the personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for installing basic plumbing.
- Describe the different tools required to remove and install basic plumbing.
Tools including :
– well maintained hand and power tools. - Describe how to protect the work and its surrounding area from damage in accordance with the given specification.
Including:
– against damage from general workplace activities, other occupations. - Describe how to isolate supplies prior to removing a range of existing fixtures and fittings.
Supplies including:
– gas, electricity, water. – i.e. limitations of authority for working on gas and electricity.
Fixtures and fittings including:
– sinks, basins, baths, taps, shower trays, shower valves and pumps, waste services, WCs, bidets, laundry - Describe how to dispose of removed plumbing components safely without causing damage to the surrounding area.
Including:
– environmental requirements for disposal.
- Describe the different information sources used when installing basic plumbing.
- Be able to prepare for installing basic plumbing.
- Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when installing basic plumbing.
- Protect the work and its surrounding area from damage in accordance with the given specification.
Including:
– maintaining a clean work space, disposal of waste. - Select the appropriate tools required to remove and install basic plumbing.
- Isolate supplies in accordance with the given instructions.
Supplies including:
– water, electricity, gas. - Remove a range of existing fixtures and fittings in accordance with the given specification.
Fixtures and fittings including:
– sinks, basins, baths, taps, shower trays, shower valves, waste services, WCs, bidets, laundry appliances and dishwashers. - Dispose of removed plumbing components safely without damaging the surrounding area and in accordance with legislation and official guidance.
- Know how to install replacement plumbing fixtures.
- Describe how to use relevant information to set out for the fitting of fixtures.
Information including:
– plans, scale drawings, job sheets, specifications, component range drawings, manufacturers’ catalogues, building regulations. - Describe how to install and seal fixtures in accordance with the given specification.
Including:
– cold and hot water supply, soil and waste.
- Describe how to use relevant information to set out for the fitting of fixtures.
- Be able to install replacement plumbing fixtures.
- Use relevant information to set out for the fitting of fixtures.
Information including:
– plans, scale drawings, job sheets, specifications, component range drawings, manufacturers’ information. - Install and seal fixtures in accordance with the given specification.
Including:
– cold and hot water supplies, soil and waste components.
– spirit level, laser, water level and plumb bob.
Tools including :
– well maintained hand and power tools.
- Use relevant information to set out for the fitting of fixtures.
- Know how to install plumbing
- Describe the purpose of clips and spacers and how to use them when installing plumbing.
Including:
– importance of fixing clips and spacers at correct distance to allow for expansion. - Describe how to install a range of water supply plumbing in accordance with the given specification.
Plumbing including:
– cut, bend and fix copper and plastic pipes to wall including the formula used to bend pipes, fit and fix taps, valves and pumps.
– cold and hot water supply, soil and waste components. - Describe how to use compression, push fit and capillary copper fittings to install plumbing safely.
Including:
– for cold and hot water supplies, and waste services.
– copper pipes, plastic pipes (rigid and flexible).
– Flexible appliance connectors. - Describe methods of connecting hot and cold water supplies.
Including supply sources:
– to appliances.
– kitchen and bathroom fittings. - Describe how to install waste services using hand and power tools.
Including:
– cutting and fixing to walls.
- Describe the purpose of clips and spacers and how to use them when installing plumbing.
- Be able to install plumbing
- Select the tools required to install plumbing in accordance with the given specification.

– well maintained hand and power tools. - Install water supply plumbing in accordance with the given specification.
Including:
– cut, bend and fix copper and plastic pipes to wall, and backgrounds
– fit and fix taps and valves. Ancillary equipment:
– spacers.
– brackets.
– retaining hardware; screw, clips etc.
Tools:
– hand and power tools.
– well maintained bending - Connect water supply plumbing using compression, push-fit and capillary copper fittings in accordance with the given specification.
Including:
– hot and cold water supplies.
– hand tools. - Install waste services in accordance with the given specification.
Including:
– cutting and fixing to walls and backgrounds.
Tools including :
– well maintained hand and power tools. - Connect waste services using push-fit, compression and plastic-weld fittings and adhesive in accordance with the given specification.
- Select the tools required to install plumbing in accordance with the given specification.
